COMMUNITY BUILDINGS

In consultation with the relevant representative bodies, from year 2000, PRS simplified its licence charge for copyright music in community buildings (such as village and similar halls, and community centres) run by voluntary organisations.  In Tariff ‘CB’ the annual charge (1% of defined income) provides blanket cover for all PRS music without the necessity for officials to log and declare each and every event during the year.  This tariff does not apply to venues run by statutory bodies.

CHURCHES

Except for churches having more than 6 concerts or recitals a year, which PRS licenses direct, the licensing of most secular musical performances in churches, certain church halls and Christian bookshops, is administered on behalf of PRS by its authorised agent Christian Copyright Licensing (Europe) Ltd, part of Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI).

EXHIBITIONS

Tariff 'X' applies to trade fairs and similar commercial exhibitions. Please note that music performances at cafés, restaurants and bars within the exhibition centre and cultural exhibitions at museums and art galleries are excluded from this tariff and are separately chargeable under the appropriate PRS tariff. 
 

TRANSPORT

Aircraft

PRS licenses airline companies’ British registered aircraft, wherever they happen to be in the world, for the following uses of copyright music:

• boarding and disembarkation music
• in-flight entertainment music (whether audio or audio-visual).

In PRS’s Tariff ‘AC’ there are rates according to the number of passengers carried, or who take up the option of music, respectively.

Other collecting societies around the world license the use of music on board aircraft registered in their particular country.

Motor coaches, buses & minibuses

PRS licenses the use of music on board coaches and buses throughout the UK.  The annual charges in Tariff ‘MC’ are scaled according to the type of device (TV, radio, CD, tape, video player) used and the seating capacity (including driver) of each vehicle.

General vehicles

PRS operates Tariff ‘GV’ at modest annual rates per vehicle, including for: ice cream vans, advertising vans, election campaign vehicles, taxis, minicabs and chauffeur-driven cars whose passengers form part of the composer’s public audience.

Passenger vessels

Tariff ‘PV’ applies to a range of British vessels on which music is performed:

• cruise liners and other ocean or sea-going vessels
• local ferries, lake, river and pleasure craft
• all other vessels

The charging structure breaks down according to the nature and extent of music use, such as: featured live music; disco and karaoke sessions; aerobics, keep-fit and dancing classes; video/film shows, jukeboxes and background music in various parts of a vessel.

Trains

In recent years, certain UK train operators have introduced rolling stock fitted with music or news channels, whether by loudspeakers or wireless or cable-diffused systems.  PRS’s Tariff ‘TR’ contains simple charges per carriage per day.

Railway stations

Tariff ‘RYS’ applies to PRS music, such as background music, over concourses and platforms at railway stations.  The tariff does not apply to live music, nor to music in associated shops, bars, cafés, restaurants and similar outlets for which separate PRS Music licences are required.
